What is Anusara-Inspired Yoga?
It's a Hatha or physical yoga system that includes five principles of alignment. These principles help you rest and move in your body in an optimal way. There are also seven loops or spirals of movement for the body that further support your physical and mental wellbeing. You can use this simple and powerful alignment system while doing any form of yoga or standing in the grocery line or sitting at your desk.
What to expect for your first class
Wear clothing that you'd wear for any yoga or workout session. The room will be fairly warm, usually about 75 degrees even in the summer. Prepare as you would for any exercise in terms of drinking water and eating food. You'll be guided through a series of yoga poses with verbal cues and hands-on instruction.
Andrea's training
Andrea studied Ashtanga and Bikram yoga for three years before she began practicing and teaching in the Anusara Yoga style in 2003. She completed a 200-hour Anusara Yoga training in 2005 with Todd Norian, Senior Certified Anusara yoga teacher and has completed the Level 1 Teacher Training with John Friend, founder of Anusara Yoga. In addition, she has taken hundreds more hours of training with various Anusara teachers.
She currently assists Todd Norain and his wife Anne Green, both certified Anusara Yoga teachers, at workshops throughout New England and continues to study with John Friend toward certification.
How Anusara Yoga developed
Anusara Yoga is a relatively newer form of yoga developed by John Friend in 1996. John studied the system of alignment of Iyengar Yoga extensively. He also studied with Gurumayi, a renowned Siddha yoga guru in India. As a result, he developed a yoga practice with a simple and powerful set of physical alignment principles and a life-enhancing philosophy.
The Anusara Yoga certification process is stringent and takes many years of training. Currently there are 350 certified teachers in the world. Anusara-inspired yoga is a designation for teachers who have completed a substantial level of training but are not yet certified by John Friend as Anusara Yoga teachers.
